Academy of St Thomas spring programme 2015

For 2015, we bring you three varied concerts with some interesting programmes.

Saturday 7th March – the distinguished horn player Timothy Brown returns to perform the favourite Horn Concerto No. 1 by Richard Strauss. After over 20 years’ service with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, he is now principal horn of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and continues to teach and perform internationally. Tim will also play the lovely Glazunuv Idyll for Horn and Strings. Conducted by Christopher Adey, this concert will begin with a rare chance to hear Schoenberg’s short and  lyrical Chamber Symphony No 2.  Dvorak’s inventive Symphonic Variations will conclude the attractive programme.

Saturday 20th June Matthew Andrews returns to conduct two of the most famous symphonies – Mozart’s Symphony No 40 and Haydn’s Symphony No 94 ‘Surprise’. Leading European virtuoso clarinettist Matthew Hunt will no doubt delight us with Weber’s popular Clarinet Concerto. This concert will conclude with a UK premiere of the Traditional Klezmer Dances for Clarinet and Strings, arranged by John Piper.  This promises to make an exhilarating and unusual finale to the concert!

Saturday 17th OctoberThe Maggini Quartet is ranked amongst the UK’s leading string quartets, and we are delighted to be joining with them for a collaborative concert.  As well as Mozart’s wonderful Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, there will be a performance of Gordon Jacob’s Pro Corda suite for Quartet and Strings.
