The Bach Players at the Octagon Chapel, Norwich

Aude Gotto presents

The Bach Players at the Octagon Chapel, Norwich
Friday 28 February 2014 7.30 pm

Stabat Mater

Vivaldi Stabat Mater and Sonatas al Santo Sepolcro
Ferrandini Il Pianto di Maria (formerly attributed to Handel)
with Sally Bruce-Payne, mezzo

What better way to wish you a Happy New Year than to tell you that you can again look forward to a lovely series of concerts by the Bach Players in the beautiful setting of the Octagon Chapel.

For this first concert they continue their exploration of the story of the passion through the eyes of Mary, this time with Vivaldi’s version of the Stabat Mater and the lesser known but extraordinary piece by Ferrandini, Il Pianto di Maria (Mary’s Lament). You will discover a different side of Vivaldi, less fast and virtuosic, slower and deeply affecting. Two sonatas for strings written by him for Good Friday provide the instrumental balance in this programme. The rich voice and warm presence of star singer Sally Bruce-Payne are wonderfully suited to convey the emotional vibrancy of the music.

The series continues with the summer concert on 10 July, From Venice to Hamburg, featuring unusual instruments such as cornetto and dulcian, and on 6 November, Sleepers Awake! offers rousing Cantatas with the title Wachet auf by Bach and Buxtehude.
